Aroostook County is the northernmost region of Maine, and is the
largest county east of the Mississippi River. It borders the Canadian
provinces of New Brunswick and Quebec, and is often referred to as
"The County," dominating wide open spaces of farmland that produce
potatoes, broccoli and peas, among others.
Aroostook offers endless recreational activities, with over 2,000 lakes,
rivers and streams, that cover nearly 80,000 acres. Numerous cultural
and sporting events as well as festivals, draw visitors to the region
throughout the year. During the spring and summer months, you can
enjoy camping, fishing, canoeing or kayaking. Hike through acres of
wooded paths, or cruise along fields of potato blossoms. Fall brings a
delightful change to the landscape as the foliage shows off its glorious
colors. While the winter months continue with snowshoeing, cross-
country skiing, ice skating and snowmobiling.
Wildlife is abundant in the Aroostook region, you may catch a moose
munching on grass in a nearby pond, a white tail deer, or even a bald
eagle cresting a ridge with a fish hanging from its talons.
On your next drive-through, be sure to include the Aroostook region to
your agenda.
