Central Maine is known for its outstanding outdoor recreation, and
extends from the state capital of Augusta, to the upper Kennebec and
Moose River Valleys north to Canada. It is best known for its world-class
whitewater rafting on the Penobscot River, Kennebec River and the Dead
River.
Summer activities may include both sporting and cultural events; from
hiking and biking in the parks and nature trails, taking in a round of golf,
boating and fishing on Belgrade Lakes, to visiting state fairs and festivals.
Fall is loaded with color, showing off what it does best this time of year,
and the winter months have plenty to offer such as snowmobiling, ice
fishing, both downhill and cross-country skiing and of course lots of
open trails for snowshoeing.
After all that exercise, you may want to relax at a nearby restaurant,
browse antique shops, or visit the Stanley Auto Museum in Kingfield.
There are also sightseeing attractions that include the Maine State
Museum, the capital city of Augusta, and the Margaret Chase Smith
Library in Skowhegan. Here you'll find the University of Maine Orono,
located in the town of Orono, along the banks of the Stillwater River. It
is Maine's largest university, as well as one of New England's premier
institutions for learning.
